American Idol: Top 12 Guys Recap and Drew's Views on the Performances

Good evening, ladies and gents, and welcome to Drew's Views. This is my second attempt at entering the blogosphere, so here goes. This blog will be a collect-all of my views on popular culture, politics, and anything that is going on in the daily world of Drew.

So, without further ado, on to the post...

Top 12 Guys Perform (3/1/11)

I frankly believe that this season of American Idol has some amazing talent. I know, I know, the judges say that every year, but this year, I actually believe that they are right. Like pretty much everyone, I was shocked last week about Jacee Badeaux being sent home just shy of the Top 24. He has an amazing voice for his age and will only get better with time.

Anyways, I will be both blogging and paying attention to both the performances and the judges comments and critiques tonight on American Idol. In my area of the earth, Idol starts in about ten minutes, so I am writing this in a hurry. I apologize in advance for my slick attempt at humor, but I am who I am.

I will be including the songs that are sung tonight with YouTube links to the original songs for comparison and critique. That way, whenever someone asks you if you have heard the original song, you don't have to say, "No, I haven't but I really want to."

So here goes...

NOTE: I apologize in advance for some of the YouTube comments that appear below some of the videos. YouTube users can be very coarse in their dialogue online.

American Idol(3/1/11)

Steven Tyler's shirt is very interesting, a shirt with lady lips grinning, literally on the shirt. Definitely wouldn't see Simon wearing that. Still think that there will be banter between Ryan and Steven.

Steven was given an American Idol logo on a stick, for his unpredictable responses to the contestants so far this season.

1) Clint Jun Gamboa-"Superstition" by Stevie Wonder http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OJsYwLs7yE
-Based on his previous performances, he seems to me like a Bruno Mars singer, which is a good thing.
-Strong vocals on this one...
-WOW, the scream!!
-DANG at the vocals

Steven-Started out strong, ended strong, proved everything he seen, brilliant
Jennifer-Saw jitters, didn't affect the performance
Randy-No karaoke singer in the world with that kind of singing talent

Drew's View: What a way to start the show, will be interesting to see how the others top this one!!
I noticed the on-stage jitters, but I agree with Jennifer that it didn't affect the vocals at all.

2) Jovany Baretto-"I'll Be" by Edwin McCain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crBHtoRASqc
-Vocals earlier in the season reminded me of Jennifer's husband, Marc Anthony.
-Pretty close to Edwin McCain's vocals, this song is one of my all-time favorites, and he is doing it justice!!

Steven-Holy Shipyards!! You brought it again, it was beautiful
Jennifer-I am happy because people got to see you for the first time, and you did it!
Randy-Well, I hate to be the one to break up the apple cart, very karaoke, you have to bring something different or it sounds like the original. Modulations were OK, it was just OK for me,

Drew's View: I thought that it was very close to the original, but I disagree with Randy, aka the New Simon. It was not karaoke at all.

3) Jordan Dorsey-"OMG" by Usher http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCnxvXxBDvY
-Not liking this one, too close to Usher's vocals, parts were not with the song.
-Falsettos were interesting, but off pitch and tune in spots.

Steven-You had the moves, it wasn't my favorite performance, wasn't OMG over the top
Jennifer-Not sure that's who you are, more RnB with soulful vocals
Randy-You have to bring something else to it. Pitchy, and paled in comparison to the original.

Drew's View: Doesn't look good for Jordan, should have picked another song to sing, it may have costed him the competition.

4) Tim Halperin-"Streetcar Symphony (Come On Over)" by Rob Thomas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkk-T2bLKHo
-First Coca Cola interview of the night before the performance
-Sounds like the lead singer of The Script, which is a good thing.
-More falsettos, this one was better placed in this song.

Steven-Not sure the song did you any justice. I've heard you sing so much better, especially behind the piano
Jennifer-It's not that you did it well, it didn't show America who u are as an artist. One of the most beautiful voices I have heard.
Randy-You didn't bring anything different or new to it.

Drew's View: Another bad song choice, but it had promise at the beginning of the performance. Doesn't look good either.

5) Brett Loewenstern-"Light My Fire" by The Doors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flOvM4Z355A
-Didn't like this one at all.

Steven-
Jennifer-
Randy-

To sum it up, the judges loved his performance, but I hated it. He did exactly what Randy had just critiqued the last two contestant's performances on. Completely hypocritical.

Drew's View: I personally don't think it was a good performance, but the judges loved it.
The fans will probably flip head over heels for it.

6) James Durbin-"You Got Another Thing Comin" by Judas Priest http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWhInhE6emE
-Very inspirational life story so far.
-Sounds like Adam Lambert, but still very awesome.
-LOVED IT!!!

Steven-That was (bleep) (bleep). First Judas Priest song on the show, crazy good. Loves it that he is over the top.
Jennifer-Love the way you perform, it's organic, it's real, from the inside. You do it so natural, it's insane.
Randy-This is right here how you it. This is how you do it.

Drew's View: Will make it, very awesome performance.

7) Robbie Rosen-"Angel" by Sarah McLachlan
-Hard song to live up to the original, by the fabulous Sarah McLachlan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx4RsCfL_fA

Steven-You can sing a ballad like nobody's business. Beautiful thing.
Jennifer-When you sing a song, you tell a story. All the notes weren't perfectly perfect, very special singer.
Randy-The notes were really pitchy, never quite comfortable, pitch wise the notes were not there.

Drew's View: Going home, should have picked another song to sing.

8) Scott McCreery-"Letters From Home" by John Michael Montgomery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDPgBBrNf48
-Like this one!!! Correction, LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE!!!
-Awesome deep voice, for him to be 16!
-Sounds like a young Josh Turner, awesome performance.

Steven-Do you hear that? Couldn't have picked a better song, so beautiful
Jennifer-This is why we didn't cut you. You were born to sing country music. In your lane.
Randy-Loved that you switched it up, you are the throwback country guy. Big fan!!

Drew's View: He'll go through, surely America will agree with me!!

9) Stefano Langone-"Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5lO4hEAJHU
-Another inspirational backstory
-Just an OK performance for me, not much different from the original song.

Steven-Love the way your voice cut through the air, you gave it up tonight.
Jennifer-Wow what can I say! I am sure everytime you are up there, I am going to love it. Beast, amazing.
Randy-You had us all rocking, that's how you do it. Couple of notes were a little sharp. You had us rockin.

Drew's View: Ok performance, he will still probably make it.

10) Paul Macdonald-"Maggie May" by Rod Stewart http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCIBwMS5gE4
-Soft voice, loved the Las Vegas week performance.
-This performance was good.
-Reminds me of James Blunt a little bit. Good vocals, has the raspy part of the song down.

Steven-You see that, it's all about the jacket. Voice ain't bad either. Character about your voice, the way you shake it off, love the character.
Jennifer-You have real character in the way you move. You're all in black, but the smile you have lights up the place. You bring joy to the world.
Randy-I like the possibility that Idol could embrace a unique singer like you.

Drew's View: Will make it to the Top 13(?)

11) Jacob Lusk-"House Is Not A Home" by Luther Vandross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPzWMxxTvk8
-Agree with the judges, his "God Bless the Child" performance was awesome.
-Love this one.

Steven-Divine intervention that brought you here, for America to hear a voice like that is so unreal, i cry when you sing.
Jennifer-Luther is gone, but we have you.
Randy-You have that thing when you open up the falls. We are lucky to have you on Idol.

Drew's View: America will be legitimately stupid if they don't vote him through to the Top 13. An utterly amazing goosebump performance.

12) Casey Abrams-"I Put A Spell On You" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d5RNJEqgas&feature=fvst
- Awesome performance, very unique and strong vocals.

Steven-You are in your mind good, and out of your mind unreal. Can't believe how you give it up.
Jennifer-You're sexy Casey. They all told you. You are going to redefine what Idol is.
Randy-Love how you transformed yourself in that song. So different, so unique. More, more, more!! Yes, yes, yes!!!

Drew's View: Will make it.

Who I Think Should Be The Five That Go Through to the Top 13
1) Scotty McCreery
2) Casey Abrams
3) James Durbin
4) Paul MacDonald
5) Jacob Lusk

Hope you enjoyed my first blog entry, and have a wonderful night!!

-Drew-
