The Top 11 (Part Deux): Idol Musings

Well, after the unbelivable, or possibly scripted, results show last Thursday, what happens tonight is anyone's guess. There are no spoilers released on what the singers are performing, so I will have to write this recap and my musings as we go along. Hope you enjoy it as usual. With the judges saving Casey Abrams from being sent home last week, there will now be a double elimination this week. The Top 11 will shrink to the Top 9.

Just found out that there is an actual theme this week for American Idol. The theme this week is....DRUMROLL, PLEASE!!!

ELTON JOHN

  • This performance seems a little too safe for me, but country is his niche.
  • It felt like we were hearing him sing at his own show. Very cool.
Steven-Scotty, nothing I can say to you that a pair of cowboy boots can't fix.
Jennifer-You start getting in your head. You have amazing instincts about performing and what is right for you. You're right on. Never doubt yourself.
Randy-You have seasoned so fast on this show. I felt like you had your own show. So comfortable. That song sounds like it could be on your record.

Prediction: He should be safe, but after last week's results, nothing is for certain.

Naima Adedapo American Idol
2) Naima Adedapo-"I'm Still Standing"
-Predicted wrong (Thought she was going to sing "Crocodile Rock")

  • This one is not doing it for me. This one sucks!! Not liking the reggae-lite sort of spin on it. She's in danger of going home again.

Steven-Boom-shakalalaka baby. Good for you for picking a song that fits you.
Jennifer-I love you baby. I believe that you are supposed to still be standing in this competition. Some songs are not meant to be flipped 360. I love the way that you perform.  And there's no doubt about how you are there.
Randy-Me honestly, I love reggae. It kinda came off kinda corny. For me, it came off corny. And that's not who you are.

Prediction: Will be in the Bottom 3, possibly going home.

Paul McDonald American Idol
3) Paul McDonald-"Rocket Man"

  • This performance feels like a James Blunt take on an Elton John song. Something seems off on this performance. Just doesn't quite do it for me. I have liked his previous songs.
  • Performance was OK

Steven-We believe. Have you been watering that suit? I love your voice. It's up to the American people. You always do a little something, at the tip of the hat.
Jennifer-That's why we encourage you to push. Yes, please. More!
Randy-So we just heard some quiet comfort. I'm not going to like. Couple of pitchy spots. Allow yourself to go all the way.

Prediction: He is safe, barely.

Pia Toscano American Idol
4) Pia Toscano-"Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me"
-Another ballad, hopefully she does amazing.
-Predicted wrong again (thought she would perform "Easy As Life" from AIDA)

  • Feeling this one, sounds a little like Fergie, which is a good thing.
  • Loved the extra touch of a choir.
  • Still hitting the money notes.
  • For once, a performance of this over-performed song that is actually good.

Steven-You done it again. Some people might have been wrong about you singing ballads again. The notes you choose to that song made me cry. That was a complete and full sentence.
Jennifer-The notes take us to another world and place. I felt you more than I had before. I feel you trying to break the barrier. Next time, I am waiting for you to stomp your foot.
Randy-You've sung a ballad every time. You've slayed 'em every time. I was just trying to get you to switch some gears again. Heard some Mariah, Whitney.

Prediction: Most definitely going through. I still think that she may win!

  • This one isn't doing it for me either. Hate to say it, but he is danger of going home again this week. He sang the notes awesome, but it still seemed a little boring to me.
  • Just an average, karaoke filled performance. I could do this kind of performance. He'll still make it, I think.

Steven-Real sweet thing to your voice. You connected to the audience, I thought you nailed it. Very good.
Jennifer-I can really feel you kinda taking our notes. You are connecting to the audience. You are back to the Stefano we know and love.
Randy-You started connecting to the audience. You are always in your head. I like that you were moving around the stage.

  • Loving that she chose this song. This performance is good. This song is awesome translated into a country tune.
  • Feeling a little bit of Natalie Maines in her vocals. That is a good thing, because Natalie Maines is one of my favorite country singers (she was formerly with the Dixie Chicks)

Steven-I have loved you since the first moment you laid your eyes on me. Just the right song for you tonight.
Jennifer-That was amazing. You were gorgeous, you sounded gorgeous. America finally got to hear you how we heard you the first time we saw you. Best of the night!!
Randy-That is one of the greatest songs ever. That is one of the greatest Lauren Alaina performances ever. Just believe. That was very hot.

  • Loving this one also. Awesome version of this song.
  • Loved the screams in this one.

Steven-You brought the heat. You've got a really good rock voice. Don't wear out your welcome. You'll be like me.
Jennifer-When you're up there, I forget we're at a competition show. Full performance of a great song by a great artist, period!
Randy-You enjoy yourself. I really felt like you were having a good time. That was a great, great, great performance.

Prediction: He will be safe.

Thia Megia American Idol
8) Thia Megia-"Daniel"
-I predicted wrong again (Thought she would sing "Circle of Life" to continue her Disney theme)
-I have a thing against her as a performer. Because of her, Casey almost went home last week. The girls love her, but I think she is just like Taylor Swift (who is a great songwriter, but a horrible performer)

  • Not feeling this performance. She needs to go home. Not the right voice for this competition.
  • Something about this performance doesn't feel right to me. Most of the vocals are pitchy to me.

Steven-I think you sang a great Elton John song well.
Jennifer-That was beautiful. That was really beautiful. You internalized the song. The melody of the song was beautiful.
Randy-I liked that it was a very relaxed side to you. It was still very safe. I don't know how that's going to help you in your votes.

Prediction: Bottom 3

  • Like that Casey trimmed his beard. Looks more professional and polished.
  • Like that this is showing the humble side of Casey. Wish America gets past their "Thia Mania" and vote for actual talent.

Steven-One of the finest moments was putting you through. That was the most beautiful song, the last two notes were awesome. That shows a true artist. You sing different every time.
Jennifer-Along the way, we have had to make some hard decisions. One decision that I didn't lose sleep over was saving you. It was just very Casey.
Randy-Listen, I'm sure that I speak for my fellow judges. Glad we saved you. That performance of hearing you sing. That was absolutely brilliant. Well done.

  • I can really feel him on this performance. I can feel the different emotions that this conveys.
  • First chills of the night. Amazing vocals on this song. He really connected to me on this one.

Steven-Jacob, man I watch how out there, or in there. The first half of that song just blew me away. The second half was equal. You just slayed me.
Jennifer-Tricky Stewart is an amazing producer. He tailored it to you. It was very beautiful. That last note, you don't see that every day.
Randy-Always remember, you've got that race horse. Give me that one spot where you can go all the way up. Hit your Jacob spot.
