Idol Musings: Top 9 Tackle Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Hits (Part II: The Recap and Opinions)

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Here is Part II of my Idol Musings for this week. As always, I will not sugarcoat my opinions of the performances tonight. You will get my complete and honest opinion, no matter how wild or crazy it may be.

ON TO THE SHOW!!! (90 Minute Episode)

This Week's Theme: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

  • Nice that they got Steven Tyler to do an intro for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, classic and priceless moment in American Idol history.
  • Awesome that they advertised the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, looks like an awesome museum to go to.
  • Awesome that along with the record executives and the producers, the contestants get to work with the likes of Ryan Tedder, Gwen Stefani, Will-I-Am, and other performers. Very awesome mentors this week.

Drew-Looked like he had a minor audio issue in the beginning, didn't take away from his performance. Very personal and very Jacob performance.
Steven-Every time you sing, you bring another piece of yourself to the party.
Jennifer-That's it. Jacob, you know what you do. You make everybody know that if you believe in yourself and do what feels right, they can do anything in this world. Perfect in every way.
Randy-You really changed the song, and I like that. I am so proud of you. I was a little worried when I heard you were doing this song. Wondering when you would have a "Jacob" moment, there were moments all over that song.

Drew-Finally doing a Janis Joplin song, awesome! First chills of the night!! Enjoyed this performance very much. This is the side of Haley we have been needing to see all this season!
Steven-I couldn't find nothing wrong with that. Janis gave the voice to rock and roll in 1968. You did it again tonight!!
Jennifer-OK! We are off to a bit of a strong start. What you are showing everybody is you are a real contender.
Randy-They love you, Haley! What exactly we were talking about was that bluesy thing you have. "Yo, look at Haley go!" Welcome back back back

Prediction: She did much better this week than in past weeks. Should be safe this week..

3) Casey Abrams-"Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by Creedence Clearwater Revival
(Predicted wrong)

Drew-Another awesome Casey performance. He definitely knows his specific kind of music. He and the other first two contestants are really bringing the heat tonight. I haven't heard a bad performance yet tonight. This is now a competition with Thia and Naima gone from the competition.
Steven-I think you need to put some wheels on that and ride around town. You are such a true musician and everytime you bring something different.
Jennifer-That's exactly right where you belong. I am paying top-dollar to be in the front row to listen to you.
Randy-A couple of things dude. You made CCR and John Fogerty proud. You have the standup bass popular in music. Casey is revolutionary. I love it.

Prediction: Completely safe. Voting for him...

4) Lauren Alaina-"Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin
(Predicted wrong)

Drew-Perfect marriage of country and RnB. Awesome performance tonight. Never thought that an Aretha song could sound good in country. Glad I was wrong.
Steven-You know I love you. Four months ago you came in here an immature young girl. And now, you are a natural woman.
Jennifer-She's amazing.
Randy-I haven't heard the other songs of the night, but you picked a very difficult song and you did a good job on the song.

Prediction: Should be safe. Voting for her, of course...

5) James Durbin-"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by George Harrison
(Predicted wrong)

Drew-This one was unexpected, coming from James Durbin. He took a risk and it paid off. I thought he performed the song very good. Loved the high note at the end of the song. Awesome performance.
Steven-You gently weeped as well. That's a really proud moment, thanks man.
Jennifer-It's nice to see that other side, the side that makes the rock and roll side work. It's so special to watch and to see your vulnerable side.
Randy-I love seeing the real true emotional side of James Durbin. You emotionally connected to the lyrics. You have to take chances to become an artist. You won, you did a good job dawg.

Prediction: Definitely safe, voting for him tonight!

6) Scotty McCreery-"That's All Right Mama" by Elvis Presley
(Got the artist he performed right)

1-866-IDOLS-06
Vote to 5706

Drew-Enjoying this performance. Scotty can sing anything and make it sound awesome! Connected completely to the audience. He proved tonight that he sounds good singing rock  and roll also.
Steven-You're all hat and no cattle. I just hope that old nostalgia comes back. You did it well.
Jennifer-You're up there, you're having fun with it. Do you watch rap or hip-hop? I feel a little bit of flavor in your moves. I'm just saying.
Randy-Scotty is in it to win it. Anybody that thought you were a one trick pony were wrong. We've never seen this side of you.

Prediction: Definitely safe. Will be voting for him tonight.

7) Pia Toscano-"River Deep Mountain High" by Tina Turner
(Got this prediction right)

Vote to 5707

Drew-Awesome to see the uptempo side of her. She can still sing anything. Heard a bit of Christina in there. Nice to see her sing something else other than a ballad.
Steven-Murderer. You killed it. You gotta know. There's a million guys having a million drinks about you tonight.
Jennifer-Vocally you proved to everybody you can sing uptempo. I'ma keep pushing you. Start researching some of the great performers. Those are the things that will take you to the next level.
Randy-Prove Randy wrong. We all believe in you. You showed that all of the singers you admired growing up is that you can deliver on the uptempo performances. Pia is in it to win it, Ryan.

Prediction: Definitely safe. Voting for her.

8) Stefano Langone-"When A Man Loves A Woman" by Percy Sledge

1-866-IDOLS-08
Vote to 5708
Americanidol.com

Drew-Not doing it for me this week. The beginning was too much in high notes. Pitchy spots throughout the song. Good attempt, though. Sounded too much like the original for me. Too much high notes.
Steven-I like the old timey in the beginning of it. Keep playing with that. You nailed it.
Jennifer-I knew you had it in you. That was beautiful. I loved it. I really really felt. That had another layer of emotion to it. Very beautiful.
Randy-I liked it too. Wasn't jumping up and down. You can take your time with something. I liked it but I wasn't jumping up and down.

Prediction: Bottom 3, going home in my opinion. For the last three weeks, hasn't brought anything new to the competition. Always sang the same way, and hasn't changed it up at all. Hasn't connected to me, and a person has to connect with me for me to vote for them. Sorry, Stefano, probably your last week on Idol. Nice knowing you!!

9) Paul McDonald-"Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash

1-866-IDOLS-09
Vote to 5709
Americanidol.com

Drew-This one is not doing it for me either. The whole song sounds like he is singing it in a different key than the instruments are being played in. He'll be in the Bottom 3 again, but barely safe again.
Steven-My perfect imperfect boy. You rocked the house.
Jennifer-I loved it, right in your lane.
Randy-I LOVED IT!

Prediction: Bottom 3, but safe. He's had some very close calls in past weeks.
